What’s the difference between a plinth and a pedestal?

The Plinth Store should probably be called ‘The Pedestal Store’ because our most popular products are technically pedestals! But it doesn’t quite have the same ring, and most people in the art world refer to them both as ‘plinths’.

While the terms are often used interchangeably, plinths are usually lower and wider than the taller, thinner and column-like pedestals.

Plinths are typically wider than they are tall - a stable foundation for showcasing objects. Plinths have a wider area for the object it supports.

Pedestals are more column-like in their dimensions - taller than they are wide. They are often used to bring the subjects up to eye-level.

Your choice between a plinth and a pedestal should be driven by personal taste, your intent, and the shape of the object you are displaying. Plinths are often used for large sculptures that have a broader base or for several objects that can spread out across the wider area. Pedestals are often used for statues or objects with a relatively smaller base compared to their height.

The versatility of our plinths is that if you put them on their side, they become a long plinth. And if you put our pedestals on their sides, they become an elongated pedestal. This extends their use, and adds to your presentation choice.

Plinth or pedestal, The Plinth Store will have a size that suits your needs.
